Freewheeling manual car

Most automobile manufacturers looking for something to make their car sound better, brighter, shinier and to appeal to more people in a very competitive mar ket, added a freewheeling system to the car's transmission. The freewheeling was touted as an economy measure. The car would be more fuel efficient if the engine could ' idle' while maintain ing road speed. There was a lever underneath the dash and the mechanism could be turned on or off as desired. This would allow a car to coast without engine braking similar to coasting in neutral. The freewheel mode is already implemented on hybrid cars, on some automatic transmission models and on trucks with automated transmission; current developments will allow to offer it also on cars with a manual transmission.

My experience in fossil fuel cars is that a manual gearbox car simply becomes a large freewheeling soapbox cart with only gravity and air/road resistance affecting its progress. In that state there is no link between the road wheels and the engine/gearbox. Meaning that freewheeling/coasting can have no damaging effect on the drivetrain.
